Nowadays, there is an ever increasing hype about a new player in the cannabis family, and it is growing in popularity day by day. Here’s everything you need to know about the magical product that’s taken the world by storm.

The Hemp plant, domesticated more than 6000 years ago in China, produces more than almost 400 organic compounds. Out of these, the two main groups of molecules with bioactive properties in hemp are the terpenes and cannabinoids; CBD belongs to the latter category.

Cannabinoids are compounds that influence the human nervous system through the endocannabinoid system (ECS).. Their main difference is in their chemical structure and their effects.

CBD is considered to have many therapeutic applications and is also consumed as a daily supplement to promote general wellness. While beneficial for general well-being, CBD does not share the psychotropic properties of its cousin, THC.

How Does CBD Work

The human nervous system is constituted of a significant amount of receptors which are like antennas that transmit signals. They use specific molecules to transmit messages.

One of these receptor systems is the endocannabinoid system, also known as ECS. These receptors are located in the human brain and the peripheral nervous system. In the brain, receptors are located in regions allocated for perception, concentration, memory and movement. This explains why ECS’s involvement in the regulation of many physiological processes such as pain, mood, and appetite.

The two main ECS receptors are CB1 and CB2. These receptors bind to molecules produced in the body known as endocannabinoids.

CBD appears to have antipsychotic, anticonvulsant and neuroprotective properties. It can also help relieve everyday stress and make the nervous system more resilient.

CBD Vs THC

Both compounds are cannabinoids derived from hemp and cannabis plants. The main difference between CBD and THC is that CBD does not contain psychoactive properties nor does it render one “high”. As a result, CBD is considered legal in most countries, while THC still isn’t. Surprisingly, some studies show that CBD can have the potential to limit the psychotropic effects of THC by limiting its ability to bind to cannabinoid CB1 receptors, which are receptors that are abundant in neurons specialized in modulating neurotransmissions.
